Privacy Policy
This Privacy Policy explains how Nexify Studios ("Nexify Studios", "we", "us" or "our") collects, uses, shares and protects personal information when you visit our website or use our mobile applications, including Learn Japanese: My Life in Japan and any future titles in the My Life in… series (together, the "Services").
We designed our apps to need as little personal information as possible. You can play the majority of our stories without creating an account.

1. Who we are
Nexify Studios is the controller of personal information processed through the Services. Our registered address and company details are set out in the Contact section below. If you have any question about this policy, our privacy contact is privacy@nexifystudios.com.
2. Information we collect
2.1 Information you give us
- Account details — if you choose to create an optional account to sync progress across devices, we collect your email address and a password hash. We never store your password in readable form.
- Support and correspondence — the content of messages you send us, including your email address and anything you choose to include, such as device details or screenshots.
- Newsletter sign-ups — the email address you submit to be told when a new language title launches.
- Optional survey and feedback responses — including votes on which languages we should build next.
2.2 Information created as you use the Services
- Learning progress — chapters completed, story choices, vocabulary seen and review performance. This is what lets the app resume where you left off and schedule your revision.
- App and device data — app version, operating system version, device model, language and region settings, and anonymous or resettable device identifiers.
- Diagnostics — crash reports, error logs and basic performance measurements.
- Website usage — pages viewed, approximate location derived from a truncated IP address, and referring page, where you have accepted analytics cookies.
2.3 Microphone and speech
Some pronunciation features may ask permission to use your device microphone. Audio is processed to score your pronunciation and is not used to identify you. Where processing happens on a remote server, audio is transmitted securely, used only to return a score, and deleted promptly afterwards. You can decline microphone access at any time in your device settings and continue using every other part of the app.
2.4 Information we do not collect
We do not collect your payment card details, precise GPS location, contacts, photos or health data, and we do not sell personal information.
3. How we use information
- To provide the Services, save your progress and deliver purchased content.
- To personalise your learning path, such as scheduling reviews for words you are forgetting.
- To fix bugs, prevent crashes, protect against fraud or abuse, and keep the Services secure.
- To measure which chapters and features work well so that we can improve them and plan future titles.
- To respond to your support requests.
- To send you product news you have asked for. You can unsubscribe from any marketing email using the link in that email.
- To meet legal, accounting and regulatory obligations.
We do not use your learning data to make automated decisions that produce legal or similarly significant effects about you.
4. Legal bases for processing
Where the UK GDPR, EU GDPR or comparable laws apply, we rely on the following legal bases: performance of a contract with you when we deliver the Services and your purchases; our legitimate interests in maintaining, securing and improving our products and understanding how they are used; your consent for optional analytics cookies, marketing emails and microphone access, which you may withdraw at any time; and compliance with legal obligations where the law requires us to retain or disclose information.
5. Sharing and disclosure
We share personal information only with service providers who process it on our behalf under contract, and only as far as necessary to run the Services. These categories include cloud hosting and storage providers, crash reporting and product analytics providers, email delivery providers for support and newsletters, and the app stores through which our apps are distributed.
We may also disclose information where we are legally required to do so, where necessary to establish, exercise or defend legal claims, to protect the rights and safety of our users or the public, or in connection with a merger, acquisition or sale of assets, in which case we will notify you before your information becomes subject to a different privacy policy.
6. Purchases and subscriptions
All purchases, including one-off season unlocks and subscriptions, are processed by Apple or Google through their in-app purchase systems. Those companies handle your payment details under their own privacy policies; we receive only a confirmation that a purchase occurred, an anonymised transaction identifier and, where applicable, aggregated sales reports. Refunds are handled by the store you purchased from.
7. Data retention
| Category | Typical retention period |
|---|---|
| Optional account and synced progress | While your account is active, then deleted within 90 days of a deletion request or after 24 months of inactivity |
| Newsletter email address | Until you unsubscribe, then removed within 30 days |
| Support correspondence | Up to 24 months after the request is closed |
| Crash and diagnostic logs | Up to 12 months |
| Aggregated, non-identifying analytics | Retained indefinitely as it can no longer identify you |
| Transaction records | As required by tax and accounting law, generally 6 to 7 years |
If you play without an account, your progress is stored locally on your device and is removed when you delete the app.
8. International transfers
We and our service providers may process information in countries other than your own, including the United States. Where personal information is transferred out of the United Kingdom or European Economic Area, we rely on appropriate safeguards such as the UK International Data Transfer Agreement or Addendum, or the European Commission's Standard Contractual Clauses, together with supplementary measures where needed. You may request a copy of the safeguards we use by contacting us.
9. Security
We use encryption in transit, encrypted storage for account credentials, access controls limited to staff who need them, and regular review of our providers. No system can be guaranteed completely secure, so please use a strong, unique password if you create an account and tell us promptly if you suspect unauthorised access.
10. Your rights and choices
Depending on where you live, you may have the right to access the personal information we hold about you, to correct it, to have it deleted, to restrict or object to certain processing, to receive a portable copy, and to withdraw consent at any time without affecting processing already carried out. Residents of California and certain other US states may additionally have the right to know what categories of information we collect, to request deletion or correction, and to be free from discrimination for exercising those rights. We do not sell or share personal information for cross-context behavioural advertising.
To exercise any right, email privacy@nexifystudios.com. We will respond within the timeframe required by applicable law, normally within one month, and may ask for information to verify your identity. If you are unhappy with our response, you may complain to your local data protection authority.
11. Children's privacy
Our Services are intended for users aged 13 and over, and our stories are written for teens and adults. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13, or under 16 where local law sets that higher threshold. If you believe a child has provided us with personal information, contact us and we will delete it promptly. Parents and guardians can also use the parental control and purchase-approval tools built into iOS and Android.
12. Cookies and similar technologies
Our website uses a small number of cookies, and our apps use similar local storage technologies. Full details, including how to control them, are set out in our Cookies Policy.
13. Changes to this policy
We may update this policy as our products evolve or the law changes. When we make material changes we will update the date at the top of this page and, where appropriate, notify you in the app or by email. Continuing to use the Services after an update means you accept the revised policy.
